History of Rudiments for Drums

History of Rudiments on the Drums

Learn the rich history of rudiments for drummers

The history of rudiments is a really interesting one.

Why do I care about the history of rudiments? Whether you like it or not rudiments are essential for any drummer whether you play drum kit or marching drum so it’s totally impossible to avoid them if you take this instrument to any real level of playing.

But we rarely stop to consider how they came to be, why they were invented and when they were invented.

The history of rudiments is an interesting one that started on the battlefield and traveled around the world until it landed on the modern drum kit in the advanced funk fusion grooves (among many others) that you’ll learn on this website.

So when were rudiments invented?

It’s a good question but you’ll have to watch the video below to get the answer and learn all about the history of rudiments for drums.

This video was recorded back in 2010 containing an audio recording with accompanying images from a chapter of the book The Drum: A History published in 2010. You can find it for you own country with a quick Google search but here are links for USA and UK. It covers the entire history of the drum from the earliest evidence right up to modern recording techniques.

The video below is quite academic in style because the publisher of the book this is taken from wanted things that way. But for those that like this sort of thing then it might be of interest to learn a history of rudiments. We couldn’t cover absolutely everything in the book but we picked out what we considered to be the most important, relevant or interesting to drum kit players. But feel free to comment below on any other aspects that you find interesting that we couldn’t cover.

If you want to learn all 26 of the NARD rudiments you can check out this rudiment mini course and make sure you have that solid foundation in technique.
