Welcome to the six eight odd phrasing drum lesson.
Six eight is not an odd time signature and is actually one of the most common time signatures. It is usually phrased as two groups of three and that feels very natural.
But what if we change the emphasis within the bar? Well if we do that we can create some very interesting phrasing. And that’s what we explore in this drum lesson.
This drum lesson was inspired by Ocean ColourScene’s ‘Riverboat Song’ which we tackled (along with More OCS, Oasis and Blur tracks) in the Britpop drum course. Riverboat Song plays the main snare accent on beat five instead of the usual beat four and it makes the groove sound so alien. But in a cool way. Like a cool alien.
And so this drum lesson explores that concept even further to see what kind of unusual phrasings we can produce within the six eight time signature.
