Reggae Drum Lesson

Learn the essential Reggae drum beats

Get started with a Reggae drum lesson

This Reggae drum lesson provides a very quick video lesson to help you learn the essential Reggae drum beat to get you started in the genre.

Reggae is the most famous music to come from Jamaica and the most well known Reggae artist is Bob Marley. His drummer Carlton Barrett is generally credited for popularising the drum beat that this lesson looks at. This beat is called the ‘one drop’ and really is essential for any drummer who wants to play Reggae.

Although Carlton Barrett is well  associated with this groove, another drummer is often thought of as the originator of the groove. His name was Winston Grennan and he performed with the likes of Toots and the Maytals, Desmond Dekker and Jimmy Cliff.

But whether he was the first to play the groove we will never know. What we can be sure of is that it became the backbone of the style that became known as Reggae and it has remained a staple groove of that genre ever since.

For Rock, Pop, Country, Funk and Blues players this rhythm will feel strange because we put great emphasis on beat one. The One Drop rhythm leaves beat one empty so it goes against your instincts to play this rhythm. Get the sheet music here.

If you enjoyed this starter Reggae drum lesson then you might be interested to delve further into it with the lesson below. Here we look at the three main Reggae drum beats as well as checking out some fills to create that authentic Reggae sound.

Full sheet music is provided and it ends with a drumless MP3 play along track so you can test you reggae skills and put them into action with real music. Click on the course button below to watch an intro video
