WHAT PARENTS SAY
“Ian has been teaching my 13 year old son Euan for just over 2 years. Ian spent lots of his own time, finding the programme of learning that best suits Euan. He has encouraged Euan to have input into what he would like to do and gets the best from him.
Ian is very happy to support us as parents as well. He’s happy to advise and explain, and gives useful direction in how best to help Euan get the most from his lessons.
He is always available outwith lesson times to give feedback and guidance, responding quickly to queries, giving helpful feedback on practice recordings Euan sends him, and other matters such as requests to change lesson times, which happens occasionally due to my work commitments.
Ian also helped us get set up with drums at home, loaning lots of different items of his own, including drum kit and headphones until we knew what we wanted and could get our own. Ian was great at pointing us in the direction of an excellent second hand drum kit so the cost didn’t get out of hand.
I would definitely recommend Ian at Inverurie DRUM Academy.
Whatever your goals and requirements, Ian will design and teach a programme to suit.”
– Laura Robertson
“Our 5 year old child has been attending weekly drum lessons with Ian at Inverurie drum Academy since January 2022.
We are really pleased with Ian’s teaching methods and our son very much enjoys his lessons – we never hear any complaints about going after school each week!
Ian has the ideal temperament and a lot of patience for teaching beginners, and especially very young children.
He is a very calm and fun teacher.
He is flexible and willing to quickly adapt his lessons to go with a child led approach, considering my son’s energy levels, mood and preferences on a given day.
He progresses at pace which seems suitable for a child, without making it feel like ‘work’.
Ian keeps us very well informed, in a timely and professional manner. We receive very detailed, written lesson notes shortly after each lesson which provide a thorough insight into our son’s lesson and progress.
The website is well setup and the whole tuition, before and after lesson communication is excellent.
We would certainly recommend Ian for tutoring.”
– Anna & Mark, Aberdeenshire
“What started off as an introductory drum lesson as a Xmas present, quickly turned into a hobby and interest for my daughter.
With no previous experience, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed how quickly she progressed.
She quickly warmed to Ian and his teaching techniques, with Ian always making it relevant to her music tastes and interests.
Each session is always followed up with a detailed summary of what she has learned and advice on what to practice between lessons, and we found the web portal really easy to access information & manage lesson schedules.”
– Graeme, parent of student age 12, Kemnay.
“I have been attending the academy with my five year old grandson for several months and have nothing but regard for his teacher Ian.
For patience, innovation and encouragement Ian is a master.
My grandson can keep time, innovate his own riffs, and read drum music sheets.
He can also listen to Ian and copy his play.
I am speaking as an amateur bass player myself and can only conclude that if you want to become a drummer, young or old, Ian is your man.”

YOU MIGHT THINK
You’re Too Old
No you’re definitely not. I love teaching old dogs new tricks
Decades of listening to music have given you a wealth of musical knowledge
Older students know so much music and have such valuable life skills that they are usually very quick learners and enjoy playing with other musicians
Learning to drum has many measurable and lasting mental and physical health benefits that help keep minds sharp and bodies active in later life
You’ve Got No Rhythm
Think of any song you know. The melody in your head has rhythm so you must too
I tap into the music you already know and love to make drumming easy and fun
Drumming isn’t a talent other people are born with – it’s movements you can learn
Like learning to ride a bike, it doesn’t take long to stop looking at the pedals and start thinking about where you want to go. Learn the basics and you’ll soon be doing wheelies
It’s also a bit like dancing – but instead of music just making you want to move, your movements make the music
If you’ve ever moved to a beat then you can definitely move to make one
You Can’t Read Music
You don’t need to – but if you want to, I can teach you to read drum kit beats – and play them on a drum kit – in your very first lesson
Unlike other instruments, drum music actually looks like a drum kit. It’s much more intuitive and easier to read than music of any other instrument you’ve seen before.
You’ve No Drums
You don’t need drums. I loan acoustic or electronic drum kits to new students then recommend good quality & value second hand kits to buy
Electronic drums are good for beginners practicing at home. They’re inexpensive, compact, sound and feel good to play, and you can use headphones to play along with the music you love
You’re Too Busy
Oh that’s a shame
Too busy with ???
Not work I hope
This isn’t work
It’s called playing the drums for good reason
It’s fun and very good for you
Whatever your day’s been like you’ll leave that behind the moment you sit down to play
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of beating drums and crashing cymbals to your favourite music
