So it’s crucial and it’s fun!

In this lesson we will look at how to write a drum part by breaking down a funk song. It’s a real song that is being created and is very typical of what I might get when recording a session fo someone. It’s a basic version of the track so it doesn’t yet have vocals or solos. In fact it doesn’t have any real instruments because everything is MIDI at this stage. Once we lay down a great drum track the artist will then build the song up properly over the top. So as a drummer we have to give it energy and awesomeness even though it doesn’t sound like the finished article yet.

In this lesson there is an accompanying written chart which shows you the structure, groove suggestions and ensemble stabs. This gives you all the information you need without getting too bogged down in detail or dictating what you should play.

The lesson below talks you through each section and shows you some ideas with me playing through it. You then get the MP3 backing track, the written music and a full performance video of me playing it.
