How to play a drum solo on the hi-hat, bass and snare

This exercise gets you creative on the drum kit

Welcome to a drum lesson that shows you how to play a drum solo on the hi-hat, bass and snare.

Often when we have to play a drum solo we suddenly find all of our creative ideas disappear. All that brilliant drumming inspiration you normally have has suddenly decided to hide just when you need it!

One reason for this is the overwhelm of too many options. We have every technique, rudiment, trick, subdivision, sonic possibility at our disposal and it’s too much. What should our brain focus on first?

It goes into panic mode and we end of with zero ideas.

So this little exercise shows you a trick you can use when creating drum solos which involves tightening up the parameters from which to choose.

By having less things to choose from our brain can focus and start playing something. And once you’ve started the flow of ideas will continue to create a drum solo.

You could use this idea just to get you started with the solo and once you’re up and running you can open the parameters back up. Or you could do the entire solo with this method if you like.

Either way this is a fun exercise which will help you perform more creative drum solos.
