How Long Does It Take To Learn Drums? Can you play drums after a week? Do you become a great drummer after one month. Can you learn to play drums to a high standard in one year?

I get asked this question a lot, “How Long Does It Take To Learn Drums?” And I mean A LOT!

And as you’ll see below, I don’t think it’s a good question. And I’m sorry because you have probably just asked that question before you ended up here. And to be honest I probably would ask that question if I was starting drumming today.

But in this fast paced world of instant gratification we sometimes need to remind ourselves that many of the best things in life require a long term commitment and hard work.

Yes it’s true….sorry!

Of course there are things we can do to speed up the process such as get great tuition and put lots of practice in but ultimately to master the drums it will take a lot of time.

However, the fun can start immediately and with a little tweak of your mindset you can enjoy the whole journey and develop every day. It really will enrich your life more than you could know.

And anyway, what does it even mean to become a great drummer? You’ll find that as you progress to each stage the goal posts keep moving. What you consider to be a great drummer will take on a new meaning and you’ll probably never reach that mystical point.

The main goal here to understand how long it takes to become a good drummer is to set realistic goals and have realistic expectations. That will allow us to achieve the most productive results from the effort we put in and also avoid the frustration that people experience when their expectations are unrealistically high.
