Drumming On TV

Drumming On TV

What are the main skills needed for TV drumming?

How to drum on TV shows

Welcome in and here we are discussing drumming on TV.

By this I mean session drummers playing on TV show theme tunes, jingle, adverts and various other TV or radio related session drumming projects.

This is not a glamorous job, it is not going to make you famous, it is not going to make you rich.

But this is another part of the jigsaw that enables working drummers to make a career from playing their instrument and, just like any professional drumming job, it can open up other work opportunities.

We go deep in this article to discuss how to become a session drummer.

The core skills you need to be able to work as a session drummer include:

  • Having great timing
  • Finding the right part for the song quickly
  • Having a deep understanding of all styles
  • Having a good attitude

Most studio work is carried out to a click so being comfortable with the click is essential. This timing course will help you develop perfect timing.

With regards to styles, the deeper and broader your understanding of genres, bands, drummers and sounds, the quicker you will be able to find the right part for the song.

Quite often people will say things like, “I want a Bonham sound for this.” If you know John Bonham, Led Zeppelin, the drum sounds Bonham used and the playing style of Bonham , then this reference is all you need to capture the desired sound for the song quickly.

If you haven’t studied John Bonham becuase you have decided that you don’t like that style of music, then you will struggle to find the sound quickly.

So don’t limit yourself. Listen widely, learn to love all music, be aware of the drummers behind the songs and their approaches to drum parts and the sounds they achieved.

Below is a video from the composer for a BBC show that has just started its next series. I played drums on this and I wanted to share it because this is typical of a lot of what I do in recording sessions.

It’s often quite simple stuff but played in time. And the other challenge is finding the required beat quickly. This one needed a rhythm which is basically lifted from Coldplay’s Clocks so that’s a good example of why we should study diverse artists and styles so that you have a rich musical knowledge to draw from. You can learn that particular drum beat here.
