This is a classic track from Scottish funk band Average White Band. It features Robbie McIntosh on drums.
We will break down the drum intro which features some repeated unison hits with the band, between which, Robbie adds different fills and variations. It is important to be able to do this because it’s a very common technique in songwriting.
We will then learn the core drum beat from the verse which is deceptively tricky with the bass drum pattern that weaves around the snares and open hi-hats. It is worth the effort to learn because it’s a very funky drum beat and you can use it in lots of other songs.
